After 17 years at the helm of DXE, former Founder and General Manager, Matt Spencer, has elected to pursue new opportunities and spend more time with his family. This month, we welcome Reuben Dickenson as DXE Medical’s new General Manager. Get to know Reuben and what he’s bringing to the table as the new leader of DXE!
Reuben attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he studied engineering mechanics. Following his time as an officer in the Army, he completed his graduate studies in mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University. After finishing his master’s degree, Reuben began his civilian career by focusing on his affinity for leading teams in technical arenas in the healthcare space. He spent 14 years with GE Healthcare in various leadership roles in imaging, biomedical services, and healthcare IT. After GE, he spent 9 years with Thermo Fischer in a wide range of commercial roles.
How did your younger years and education influence your career?
While growing up in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Reuben learned the value of hard work and responsibility at a young age. He began working full time at a restaurant at age 12, and by 14 he was promoted to the assistant manager. Later, during his time at West Point, Reuben continued to learn and apply the value of hard work and servant leadership and attributes it to his current leadership style.
Professionally, who inspires you?
Reuben points to Dale Carnegie as professional inspiration, and How to Win Friends and Influence People as one of his favorite books. Reuben states that much of his success and love for what he does comes from learning how to cultivate strong professional relationships that thrive by taking a genuine interest in the other person and their situation and needs first and foremost.
What would you consider your guiding principles?
1 — Exhibit integrity in all that you do.
2 — Care passionately about what you do.
3 — Do your best, every day.
4 — Have fun doing what you do.
What are you looking forward to most about being a part of the DXE Family?
“What we do matters.” Reuben says that he’s excited to join a passionate, engaged and motivated team that is making such a positive impact in a growing healthcare industry. DXE is a one-of-a-kind business model and is uniquely positioned to help our Customers in their goal of saving lives.
What is your initial vision for DXE?
“I would like for DXE to continue being the best partner possible to help our Clients save lives. We want to continue our upward momentum and passion to be a great business partner, as well as seek additional opportunities to help our Clients and Partners even more in the future as we find new ways to grow and improve together.”
– Reuben Dickenson, VP & General Manager of DXE Medical, Inc.
Reuben has lived in Brentwood, TN with his family for the past 20 years. His wife, Laura, recently became VP of Strategic Alliances for Digital Connections, Inc., an information systems services provider. Reuben and Laura have 4 children, 2 Boston terriers and 1 cat, so it’s a very busy household. Their oldest daughter, Julia, is a pre-med student at Auburn University, with the goal of being a neurosurgeon someday. Oldest son, Dabney, starts Tennessee Tech as a freshman this fall, joining the college golf team and will study engineering. Reuben and his wife also have 15 year-old twin boys, Russell and Robert, who attend Brentwood High School, play football together and work at Kroger.
In his time between work and family, Reuben enjoys fitness activities (as he showed us on the Sand Volleyball court recently), volunteering at his sons’ school, cooking Cuban food, reading a variety of books, watching movies like his favorite, The Big Lebowski, as well as playing a few rounds of golf with friends when time permits.
